T/S FUNCHAL at Istambul 28 June 1972

In June 1972 the T/S FUNCHAL made a long cruise from Lisbon across the Mediterranean up to Istambul where the photograph was taken on 28 June by Bert Lammers.
It was FUNCHAL's first visit to Istambul.
The black hull without the lower white line is no longer in place after she was painted blue during the February - March refit at Lisnave Rocha shipyard. She was repainted blue for the charter voyage as ship of state with Portugal's President Admiral Thomaz to Brazil in April - May. On her return she did a voyage to the Azores still with blue hull and on the following stay in Lisbon the hull was repainted black again but with the white list as boot topping

She also did a long Mediterranean cruise, visiting Istambul for the first time in June 1972 as well as several Madeira and Azores cruises.
However boilers trouble led to her lay up in Lisbon in September 1972 and it was decided to replace the steam turbines by more economical Diesel engines.
